Into the Garden is a collection of 5 Grade Initial - 1 / Elementary pieces all with a garden theme.

 

 

Bursting into Life by Catherine Wilson is peaceful, celebratory and full of awe.

 

The continuous quaver / eighth-note movement is interrupted four times within the piece in order to take a moment to ponder the miracle of life.

Through the Garden Gate by Catherine Wilson is gentle, understated, with a lilting feel.  

 

The left hand ostinato patterns help support a more flowing, lyrical right hand which has echoes of a familiar English Country Garden melody.

Features: Finger swaps on repeated notes, scale based changes of hand position and octave jumps, syncopation and use of triplets.

Fairies in the Flowers by Catherine Wilson is calming, delicate and has a hypnotic feel.

 

The minimalist inspired right hand motif features repetition an octave higher to add to the fairy-like quality while the left hand chord progression requires the left hand to change hand position by moving down in thirds.

The Secret Path by Catherine Wilson is uplifting, thoughtful,  with a sense of adventure.

 

The open fifths in the left hand create a nostalgic feel of times long ago, while the right hand dotted rhythm and stepwise movement helps to  create a playful feel.

Features: Open fifths, dotted rhythm, playing an octave and two octaves higher than written

 

Focus: Building confidence changing hand position, rhythm, dexterity

 

 

Dance of the Garden Gnomes by Catherine Wilson is boisterous, dramatic and has a playful feel.

 

The use of acciaccaturas, open fifths and repetitive dance-like rhythm add to the drama while the melody is played first by the left hand, then the right, then spread between the two to cover a range of three and a half octaves!
